Pantelleria,

known as the “black pearl of the Mediterranean,” is the largest of the islands surrounding Sicily. It lies in the middle of the channel that shares its name, roughly halfway between Sicily and the African continent.

The island covers an area of 83 square kilometers and reaches its highest point in the central area, where Montagna Grande rises to 836 meters above sea level. Its landscape is particularly complex, shaped by multiple volcanic events that have occurred and overlapped over time.

The stretch of land running from northeast to southwest is mostly rocky and drops steeply into the sea, while the northwestern side is more gentle, with rolling hills and flatter terrain.

What makes Pantelleria truly unique is the diversity of its landscapes. Surrounded by crystal-clear waters and vibrant seabeds, the island encloses a rugged interior where, despite the harsh conditions, people have successfully cultivated vineyards. It is also home to a protected nature reserve that extends from the center of the island down to the coast.

Pantelleria’s volcanic origin explains the spectacular plumes of steam that can be seen rising from cracks in the rocks—these are known as “Favare.” The same geothermal activity gives rise to natural saunas, called “Stufe,” where steam emissions reach very high temperatures. Among the island’s many thermal springs, the most renowned is the “Specchio di Venere” (Mirror of Venus).
